Above are some of the materials needed to be read to write the paper. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS! THE TEACHER IS VERY STRICT! THANK YOU
From the Background readings above, address the following questions for your case assignment in the form of an essay. Complete a 2-3 page paper using complete sentences for each question and APA formatting for citations. Include any citations used to support your research. For additional expectations, including how to organize your assignment, see the Assignment Expectations below.
Define biodiversity.
Why is biodiversity important? What are some of the benefits of biodiversity?
How is biodiversity measured?
What is extinction? What is causing it today?
What is the Endangered Species Act? What is it meant to do? (reflect on the economic consequences of the Act as we will be delving into the topic later on)
What are some of the most and least diverse species in your local area?
Try the interactive map called the “Map of Life” developed by a research team from both Yale University and the University of Colorado Boulder. The link can be found at https://www(dot)mol(dot)org/location/32.045/-471.489/.
Select “Locations” from the menu bar at the top right. Once the map pulls up, you can select an area of interest to you. For instance, clicking on the state of Arizona the data should indicate the greatest diversity is found in bird species (394) and the least in palms (1).
Select an area of interest to you to describe in your essay. Copy and paste the chart area showing the most and least diverse species in your area (map of United States does not need to be copied, only the species chart). Were you surprised by the results? Why or why not.
Insects are the largest and most diverse group of organisms on Earth. Select one insect species from your local area (click on the insect species from the Map of Life to learn more) and describe its importance to humans (medicine, research, agriculture, aesthetics, etc). Include an image of your chosen insect within your essay.
What can you do as an individual to help slow the loss of biodiversity?

Biodiversity
Biodiversity includes a variety of life on Earth, which includes all organisms, population and species, genetic variation, and their complex assemblages of communities and ecosystems (Gaston & Spicer 2004). It also refers to the count of varieties of organisms found in a specific region. Biodiversity is important to the well-being of life on the planet. It is responsible for boosting ecosystem productivity. It protects freshwater resources, contributes to climate stability, provides food to living organisms, provides medicinal value, promotes soil formation and provide nutrient for storage and recycling, supports the growth of tree species, increases ecosystem productivity, and offers places for tourism and recreation (Shah, 2014). There are numerous ways of measuring biodiversity. It can be measured in terms of its relation to species richness, or the number of species in a given region. The species diversity in a given area can be measured using the Simpson index and Shannon-Winer diversity index.
Extinction is a process whereby a family, species, or other groups of plants and animals cease to exist. Extinction is part and parcel of life on planet earth. Over the decades, most species that existed on earth have evolved gradually and went into existence. Species go through the process of extinction due to natural shifts in the environment that occur over long periods, for instance, ice ages. However, the recent environmental changes caused by human activities have led to an increased rate of extinction. Some of the activities that lead to extinction are overexploitation of natural resources, an influx of non-native species, and diseases (National Wildlife Federation, 2019).
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a federal law that is meant to provide programs to conserve the endangered plant and animal species and the habitat where they exist. The federal agencies that lead in the implementation of ESA are the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service (U.S. EPA, 2018). A study conducted by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in 2011 found the total annual value of ecosystem services to be at $1.6 trillion in the U.S. The total value of national wildlife ref...
