Sex-Oriented Disorders: Hemophilia
Sex-linked disorders are disorders brought about by sex-linked traits. The sex-linked traits are genetic and are often found on sex chromosomes found in our reproductive cells. The sex chromosomes determine the sex of an individual and carry each linked traits from one generation to the next. Inlays essence, sex-linked characteristics are hereditary traits an offspring gets from their parents. Some of these traits are sex-linked disorders. During reproduction, the male sex cells and the female sex cells fuse to form a zygote. The zygote gets a sex cell from the male and female sex cells. The male sex cell is made up of the XY chromosome, while the female is only made up of the X chromosome. The offspring gets the sex from the male if it takes up the Y chromosome it picks up the male sex, and if it picks up the X chromosome, it takes up the female sex. When it comes to sex-linked disorders, they are found in sex-linked genes found in the sex chromosomes. If a disease is present on the X chromosome, it is either inherited by both the male and the female. If it exists in the Y chromosome, the men tend to get the disorder since women only have the X chromosome. Women can also have hemophilia if both of their X chromosomes have been affected or the other X chromosome is defective.
Such a disorder is hemophilia which is X recessive. The phenotype mainly exists in males since they have the Y chromosome and is often clouded by the X chromosome in females. Hemophilia is a blood disorder where the blood lacks clotting factors. People who have the disease have low levels of factor viii or factor ix that exist in the X-chromosome (Bailey, 2017).
