Compare & Contrast 2: SEXUALITY, RACE, APPROPRIATION, HETERONORMATIVITY
For each pair of films, students will complete a short writing assignment (500 words) where they will be asked to identify, one of the key terms from the unit and apply that term to both films in a compare and contrast style. Each short writing response must be written in complete sentences, using university-standard language, grammar and punctuation, in the student’s own words and aim to synthesize and reflect on the material presented including referencing the weekly readings (not just the plot or narrative of the film).
Each short writing assignments should consist of a topic sentence stating the basis for comparison and one paragraph about each film.

Ballroom dancing is one of the most appreciated dancing styles that are being practiced in different parts of the world. Therefore, in both the Mad Hot Ballroom movie and the Strictly Ballroom film share a common theme, which is race. The films are a depiction of racial harmony, brought about by the characters from different races working together.
The Mad Hot Ballroom is a documentary that focuses on the ballroom dance. The films consist of characters from different racial origins. Therefore, such is an indication that anyone across the world can enjoy the dance. The eleven-year-old kids only have ten weeks to prepare for the competition (Bulman, 2006). This seems impossible, but it is amazing how the participants are able to work in harmony to create the best dance group ever. The racial harmony is created when the kids show respect for one another regardless of their race. The joy expressed by the kids is clear evidence that they consider themselves as a family without any racial boundaries. Besides, the documentary also shows how different kids appreciate their racial origin and are not out to speak about it in front of other students. An example is a case where the film shows the kinds of personalities that the kids have as well as their thoughts (Dodds, 2008). The kids seem to be outspoken, but such is not the case for the few whose English is not their first language. Such students seem to be more reserved than the rest. However, this does not affect their participation in the competition hence indicating the racial harmony created by the film.
