Reflection from Houghteling and Tinterow's Articles about Art and Fashion
Everyone is responsible for reading the weekly assigned articles or chapters. After reading, post a one-two paragraph response online on Canvas on the discussion board for that week.
The kinds of questions to answer in your responses are:
What is the main thesis of each of our readings? (i.e.: What do we learn?)
Are there any secondary theses?
How do the authors support their arguments?
What kinds of sources and images do they use?
How are the various arguments developed?
Do you agree with the argument(s) made? Why? Why not?
How do the readings support/contradict what you have learned in your classes up this day?
What is the value of learning about these topics?
Can we apply what we learn from these readings to other interiors, art objects, cultures, and contexts?
Can you find any similarities between the time-period discussed (and its design) and our contemporary culture?

Sylvia Houghteling enlightens us about emperors’ expensive cotton clothes worn in South Asia. The imperial costumes were wealthy by the sensory experience the emperors achieved and its sophisticated poetic and political messages as an advancement of modern art. Houghteling (2017) describes the fine and smooth cotton, wool, and goat-hair fabrics used to manufacture finely crafted clothing. The author uses insights from other writers regarding the valuation of elite garments worn by emperors in the 17th century in South Asia. As noted from the various arguments from other writers, the Mughal imperial court did not use the textiles and dress to associate with the rest of the world but to display their rich cultural heritage (Houghteling, 2017). I agree with these arguments because the clothing had messages and paintings that had information regarding the South Asia heritage because they were not recognized as elite garments worldwide.
