On October 12, 2013, I attended the New York's Philharmonic Orchestra opening, the 34th session. The two main pieces of the evening were Pines of Rome and Fountain of Rome led by Alan Bright alongside special guest Perlman Itzhak. Apart from the two major pieces of musical presented, five other solo pieces that featured Itzhak Perlman, a famous violinist was the main attraction. He performed songs like the fantasy of Russian themes originally written by Rimsky –Krsakov. Other performances included Meditation by Massenet and the theme from Schindler list composed by John Williams.
Alan Bright is one of the first local musicians, made the entrance as the crowd gave him a roaring welcome. He began his performance by tunes of the fountain of Rome a piece written by Ottorino Respighi in 1916. All his four performances depicted Rome fountains during different periods. Le Fontane di Roma meaning the fountain of Rome presented vibrant expression of the four greatest fountains in Rome. The music presented sparkles and soar with a sensual effect that Respighi expressed for each fountain presenting Rome's greatest beauty.
Alan Brights’ performance connected different pieces seamlessly presenting darks to the dusk situation of Rome. The mourning solos by Laing Wang and Brey Carter was delightful to the audience. The melodies in the first performance revolved around the light and dark tones produced by the powerful sounds of horns that accelerated the entire performance. The tempo and the rhythm were fast and high and eventually evened out with the pleasant sounds of horns. The culmination was more powerful when the entire orchestra joined in with different instruments that generated pleasant sounds in the air. The second song included movement that depicted twilight featuring a solo by Gleen Dicterow accompanied by the orchestra that continued in a moderate tempo until the music faded away like a quiet dusk settling on the fountains of Rome.
Itzhak was born in Israel and is considered one of the famous violinists of the 20th and 21st century. Although Itzhak suffered from polio at an early age, this was his 87th appearance performing alongside the Philharmonic orchestra. He was looking vibrant and ready for the evening. The five pieces of songs featured Itzhak Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the violinist alongside the Philharmonic orchestra based on Russian themes of fantasy. Itzhak entered the stage with the help of his crutches alongside Alan Bright and was met by wonderful applause from the audience.
Alan Bright carried Yitzhak’s violin a unique antique of 1745 owned by Menuhin Yehudi also one of the finest violinists of the Stradivari period. The first piece commenced with the orchestra presenting a somber tone up to a point where the soloist began with enchanting tones produced by Perlman’s violin. The tone grew rapidly followed by his intonation that sounded harsh, but later slowed down. The second performance was by the French composer Jule Massenet that is the meditation.
