Mao's Last Dancer and Cabaret are movies that express the characters' interest in different aspects of life and eras. The films depict the thoughts and practices in the culture of the casts, in relation to what the principal characters of the movie pursue.
Mao's Last Dancer is about an 11-year old Chinese boy who went into a ballet school and was the best dance (Walsh, 2009). He went to Texas for an exchange program later but fell in love with a young lady and refused to go back home. Instead, he married the American lady and lived with her until their divorce when he missed his parents. However, he later rises in his career, but his relationship suffers as he can not go back home until when his parents visited him (Walsh 2009). Cabaret, on the other hand, is about her student who goes to a new country to study but is from a poor background (Lareau, 1991). There he meets friends from different cultures and have different beliefs in life and how it affects their relations with each other (Foell & Jelavich, 1995). Sally wants to be in open relationships; Fritz wants someone to sponsor his financial needs, and Natalia is a Jewish heiress. Brian, the student, is a chaste gay.
In both movies, there is resistance to change. In Cabaret, Brian had the proposal to be one of Sally's lovers, but he could not agree to it because he was chaste and gay. His friends have the pressure to live a lavish life and go extra miles to achieve it, but sticks to working for what he wants. He does not fall to peer pressure (Foell & Jelavich, 1995).
