Understanding the background and theme of an artwork is essential for any viewer. It allows him to have a better appreciation of the piece and the artist's intention and desire when making the piece. Accordingly, this article would focus on Pablo Picasso's abstract, oil canvas painting entitled Guernica, which he created in Paris back in 1937. After creating this art piece, the Germans bombarded the city of Guernica, a city within Spain's Basque territory. All in all, the author believes that by carefully looking at the artistic elements and the developments during such time of the creation of the art piece, a deeper appreciation of the same can be gleaned.

Pablo Picasso's Guernica features several objects in the composition. While most of these were distorted objects and elements, several distinguishable and prominent features include bull, human faces, light bulb, and a candle. Accordingly, several artistic elements could also be seen from the art piece itself, such as the distinction and representation of the lines, shape, and space of the overall piece.
