A master of the oil medium, and a supreme colorist, Titian created masterpieces that evoked a feeling of dreaminess and reverie to the viewer. Like his teacher, Titian utilized various musical elements in his work – the movements of characters rhythmic, the forms flowing, and typically lacking the mathematical precision that the High Rennaissance paintings were known for. Hanging over the altar of the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the painting can be seen clearly even from the back of the church, thanks to its vibrant colors and colossal size. One has to realize that this painting is over 22 feet tall. A lesser artist may have shrunk at the mere size of canvass before him, but for Titian, this was a perfect opportunity to commemorate the beauty and glory of Mother Mary.
The painting is composed of three main sections: the earthly realm, the Virgin Mary’s ascension, and the Heavens. The space between each section provides clarity in movement, while the gradation of color provides the changing mood.
