Jacques Louis David is one of the most remarkable artists and an embodiment of Neoclassicism style. Most of his paintings draw their inspiration from radical revolutionaries, service of royalty and the emperors. He transmitted his Neoclassicism style to another generation of art students who continued to use the style in the later years. The Neoclassicism style was a reaction against the cultural responses to Roman art and the French court. Some revolutionary leaders took advantage of some of his neoclassical art pieces for political gain. He still stands as one of the most influential painters in history, with remarkable art pieces such as the death of Marat, Death of Socrates and Napoleon Crossing the Alps at Saint Bernard pass.
Death of Marat- 1793
This is one of the most remarkable paintings by Jacques mainly due to its political theme during the French revolution. The painting is a propagandist piece which was aimed at changing a ruthless and violent revolutionary into a political martyr. The artwork tried to transform a bloodthirsty extremist into a hero to indicate that he was martyred for the sake of the revolutionary cause. It is a remembrance of Marat and a contemporary political painting that is similar to the Death of General wolf by Benjamin West in 1770 (Stevens, 2019). Marat’s reputation had declined as the revolution continued despite Jacques attempt to portray him as a political hero during the revolution. However, Jacques still used his experience and extensive knowledge as a high renaissance artist and a Hellenistic artist to endow the Marat’s death in a new light and independent from his real life reputation.
