Creativity in Teaching and Learning Music

Essay Instructions:

Final Project. The final paper project offers you an opportunity to apply the content of this course to your understandings of creativity and music teaching and learning. Your paper should be informed by one or more of these creative experiences: composing, arranging, creative performance, improvisation, and creative listening.
Length and format. 10-12 pages of the MAIN BODY, excluding references. APA protocol is required. Include a title page, abstract page, running header, etc., and references pages (not included in the 10-12 page length requirement)
Content. Your paper should be comprised of three separate sections:
First Section. Introduction, your topic, and “what the literature says” about your chosen topic.
Second Section. “Putting it into Practice” in the music education classroom. Construct and describe how you would implement some of these ideas (OR YOU MAY CHOOSE TO CONSTRUCT A SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONAL UNIT) in the elementary or secondary school music class/ensemble, where you provide opportunities for creative thinking on the part of your students. You may choose to include any charts, graphic, lesson plans, etc. you construct (must be original work).
Third Section. “Closing Summary,” where you share elements of what you’ve learned through our readings and discussions this semester, and how you might apply what you’ve learned to your future studies and teaching. 1page.
Your paper should include a title page, abstract page, 10-12 pages of main body of your paper, and references page(s). You should cite at least 8-10 references in your paper.
Some aspects you will talk about in your final paper that you might want to mention in your proposal: What is “creative thinking? Why is it important? How does one assess and evaluate student creative work? What are some challenges for teaching creativity (composition, improvisation, etc.)? How does your philosophy include creativity? Each one of these points, and others you might include (see the topics for each week on the schedule) should include citations to our class readings.

Abstract
Creativity is expressed in various ways depending on its context. This is seen in performance, improvisation, and composition. However, promoting creative thinking in the music classrooms has become difficult to do. A modified music education strategy for secondary school taking up music education is vital. This can improve and enhance students’ ability in the field of music. This article presents the modified strategies and techniques for students at secondary level in promoting creativity through activities such as music composition as a tool of instruction. This enable students with limited experience to improve, participate and engage in class activities by expressing their own musical ideas. Concepts and fundamentals in regards to music were introduced using various teaching tools to promote a better composition experience. The environment created provided an atmosphere conducive for a better thinking process wherein students were encouraged to think creatively in the music education.
Introduction
There are several views and meaning of creativity depending on its context. It can be viewed as an attribute of an individual while others interpret it as a cognitive process. Under certain circumstances, this term is often misused and misinterpreted. In general, creativity is a process resulting to an original and novel work which is considered as something that is of use by a certain group of people.
In arts, creative thinking plays a key role to develop a skill. It is not based on any divine thinking or mysterious process or something that is exclusive to people possessing superior intelligence. As mentioned by Webster (2001), acquiring creativity can be done in various level, and several attributes are linked with creativity. It can also occur in different levels from a simple melody created by a child to the products of great musicians. In the field of music, this can be also explored in various roles of musicianship such as in performing, in improvising, and in composing.
With regards to education, music is considered as one of the fundamental subjects involving creativity with its increasing demand among students who are interested to be musically creative. Among teachers and instructors, their training and seminars is a significant factor for the increasing demand of students seeking professional training wherein strategies and technique, adapted from the ever-changing needs of the society, are incorporated. This would eventually lead to the success in the teaching profession. Teachers continuously modify their learning strategies according to the needs of the students which would enable them to discover and explore creativity for themselves. In this way, students would become independent and creative through advancement, exploration, application, experiences, analysis and reflection in the development of the their potential in the field of music (Bujez, 2014).
