Summary of the Issues in Fraud Case 8-1
Fraud case 8-1 presents an example of accounting irregularity experienced in the field of business ethics. In the recent past, incidences of accounting fraud have increasingly found their way to business headlines (Albrecht et al., 2011). In the case of Cindy Patterson, who was mandated with responsibilities of bookkeeping by Levon Helm, the company owner, it is evident that there is a lack of integrity, one of the fundamental principles of accounting. More importantly, through Patterson, the case presents a scenario that necessitates the need for financial professionals to make ethical decisions (Albrecht et al., 2011). Patterson made a wrong decision to borrow from the business without Helm's knowledge by forging the company's expenses.
Application of Christian Principles in the Case
Two ethical perspectives – teleological and deontological – can be used to explain the ethical issue presented in the case. The Christian worldview seems to favor the deontological aspect, which calls for individuals to make choices on what is right or wrong. To ensure that people are well guided in making ethical decisions, God issued ten commandments presented in the Bible (Masten, 2012). One of the commandments forbids Christians from stealing.
