Writing Your Research Paper

Before attempting to answer these questions you must:

  1. Read over the “Example Paper and Guidelines” document.
  2. Watch the video entitled “using Psych Info and Google Scholar”
  3. Find at least two journal articles using the psychinfo and/or google scholar that are related to your topic. Read over the whole article, pay extra attention to the methods and discussion sections of the article.
  4. Find some videos (on youtube, etc.) using the keywords that are related to your research topic and questions and use the observation techniques from last week to practice more naturalistic observations.

Introduction

 Topic:

Gender differences in preschoolers and toddlers (this is an example of a topic, please write a topic that you may be interested in exploring in this class below).

Research Question:

Example research question - Do boys and girls play more together during these ages or separately? (mixed gender or segregated play). Please write your own research question below:

Why is your topic an important area of child development to study? What can we learn by studying this? What are the broader implications of studying this?

What methods did the researchers use? Are you seeing commonalities in the way past research has been conducted? Use this to justify how your own observations will be done.

Your Observations

In your practice observations did you observe any behaviors that are relevant to your topic? What did you observe? Note specific behaviors you observed, and the specific things the child did and said. You can directly quote the child if appropriate. Note who the child interacted with, and where the child spent their time (i.e. inside the classroom or on the playground).

Discussion

Similarities and Differences:

What similarities related to your topic did you notice between the toddlers and the preschoolers? Why do you think you observed these similarities? And why do you think you observed these differences?

What differences related to your topic did you see between the toddlers and the preschoolers? Are these differences what you expected why or why not?

Integrating your Observations with Prior research:

Does this support or contradict prior research on your topic? How? If you noticed any contradiction, why do you think there was this contradiction(s)? Provide a potential reason why.

If some of your observations contradict prior research why do you think they might contradict it?

What are the limitations of your observations/study? How could you address these limitations?

Future research:  What “large scale” study could be done to address your research question?

Who do your results generalize to? Why do your results apply to this group(s)? What steps could you take to improve your study so these results could be applied to more people/populations? What are the benefits of being able to generalize our results? Why should we be careful about over-generalizing our results?

Introduction
Topic: Understanding the effects of poverty on the socio-emotional development of children
Gender differences in preschoolers and toddlers (this is an example of a topic, please write a topic that you may be interested in exploring in this class below).
Research Question:
Example research question - Do boys and girls play more together during these ages or separately? (mixed gender or segregated play). Please write your own research question below:
How does poverty affect the emotional development of children
Why is your topic an important area of child development to study? What can we learn by studying this? What are the broader implications of studying this?
Understanding the effects of poverty to the development of a child’s emotional capabilities is important since emotional stability is central to the field of child development. By studying this, scholars would be able to address possible emotional issues for low-income region. This can also be used by policy makers to improve social care.
What does current research say about your topic/research question? Some things to look for and discuss:
Poverty can affect the child’s ability to develop his socio-emotional abilities. For example, Noonan, Burns, and Violato (2018), show that children who come from high-income families experience fewer emotional and behavioral problems by 11.
What does the current literature say? What does past research say about the topic? What patterns and trends are you seeing in the research?
Current literature points out to a deeper and more intensive effect of poverty to a child’s emotional development, which includes deficiency in “neuroendocrine function, early brain development, and cognitive ability”.
What methods did the researchers use? Are you seeing commonalities in the way past research has been conducted? Use this to justify how your own observations will be done.
Both the literature utilized in this article utilized a ‘longitudinal cohort study’ based on survey questionnaires in their respective geographic regions. However, due to constraints of time, the author believes that a systematic review of available evidences would be best to determine the effects of poverty on a child’s development.
What did the previous literature find out about your topic? What were their results?
Previous literature
Previous literature supports the idea the early interventions are needed to help a child develop socio-emotional stability. Additionally, the previous literature found in this study shows that...
