Subject: Water Supply and Health
Introduction
Water is life, they say. Water accessibility and availability is essential for the survival of all living organisms on earth. Water which is accessible easily, affordable, reliable and safe to all humans is an essential factor that ensures good health. This has not been the case, however, especially in the developing countries over the past decades as very many people lack the access to quality and enough water.
Issue Description
For the past several decades, more than 1 billion people in the developing countries have lacked the access to a reliable, affordable, safe and easily accessible supply of water. This poor supply has impacted the health of these individuals negatively. Acute diarrhea diseases that are infectious, chronic episodes of diarrhea and other non-diarrhea diseases have been an unending problem in these areas. Most of these arise from species of chemicals due to unsafe water, for example, fluoride and arsenic. This menace also impacts personal hygiene maintenance and productivity (Hunter & McDonald, 2010).
Engineering Solutions
Engineers originally are known to be problem solvers. They have not been left behind on this issue either. In most cities and towns in the developing countries, Civil Engineers have planned and constructed roads and piping systems to transport water. Mechanical Engineers have come up with water treatment plants and with the collaboration with Chemical Engineers, have provided safe water to the people.
This has not been the case in the rural, however, as most of the infrastructure is not available. Engineers in collaboration with most ministries of environment, health, and other funding organizations are planning to expand the same in the rural areas. They are also pushing the respective governments to finance the construction of roads in the rural.
