In the history of the mass print circulation, the advent of the magazine has always been hailed as the turning point of this media. While people were starting to lose interest with the advent of television and Radio, things turned around when lifestyles magazines and other genres started spreading wildly. However, if the recent research by the Association of Magazine Media is anything to go by, then it seems the tide is turning once more. The results of the analysis were collaborated by another study by the Media Post based on the Audit Bureau of circulations data over the same period (Mcllory 2011) .To understand the impact of the decline, one has to draw conclusions by searching for the trends across the statistics.
The first conclusion from the data analysis reveals that the decline in sales could have been precipitated by the hard economic times. To support this, one can look at the period under survey from June 2001 and June 2011. This is the same period within which many economies were hit by global recession and thus, the purchasing power was greatly reduced hence the 47.5% decline observed by ABC FAS-FAX circulation, (Sass 2011). Newsstand sales according to (Kinsmann 2011) accelerated their fall down 7.3% compared to the beginning of 2010. Clifford (2010) also decried the newsstand sales drop in the last six months of 2010 a period that was littered with falling economies.
The second conclusion that can be deduced from the numbers is that the sales slump or slow growth was not targeting one genre of the magazines but was uniform across all the board. The fact that ABC has a collection ranging from gardening to real estate to dieting indicates that the sales were not about taste but something more implicit.
