Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was a famous American artist who lived in New York. The artist was the producer and director of pop arts. Most of his paintings explored the connection between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity around the 1960s. One of his work that interested and I chose for this assignment is ‘’Kiku 1983.’’ The art shows that the image of a flower which had been painted using different bright colors (‘’Andy Warhol, Kiku: one plate,’’ 2018). Also, the colors that have been used seemed to be thin, which is in contrary to the paintings that were made in the 1960s. Nevertheless, most of Warhol work does not revolve around the nature or plants which made me choose the painting to understand it deeper. I needed to understand what made Warhol draw the image and the meaning of the image to the intended audience.
The research that I conducted about the painting indicates that Warhol drew the image for his Japanese audience. A person from the Gendai Hanga Center in Tokyo requested Warhol to make a painting tailored for the Japanese. The person had known Warhol since he came to their center in 1982. Specifically, the person knew the love that Warhol had for flowers. The painting focused on particular images of Kiku flower (Chrysanthemum flower) which is traditionally considered to symbolize the Japanese Emperor. Warhol made 43 unique paintings of the flower after which he created different single, double, and group images of Kiku.
Further, all the paintings of the flower were consistent with its form and were made in bright pink, blue, yellow, and green colors. The colors were consistent with the flower’s structure which makes it easier for identification by the audience. Hence, those who know the flower can easily understand its meaning to the Japanese.
