The COVID 19 pandemic has excited various debates, especially on the measures to contain the spread of the disease. Curbing the spread would be on community or individual levels, but certain factors would determine it. Different philosophers would have different arguments on the community or individual responsibility approach. John Stuart Mill would embrace a community approach while Aristotle would support individualism.
Mill believes that force should only apply to tame an individual from harming other members of the community. Otherwise, if the person would only hurt themself and not affect the community, he should have the freedom. COVID 19 is a highly contagious disease, and the public needs to be protected. Mill would advocate that the people who tested positive for the disease should be taken to a compulsory quarantine until they recover to protect the community.
