Can Democracy Exist Without Trust?
The most important thing about the video is the speaker’s thoughts on the growing distrust in the concept of democracy. He notes some notions that stood out to me, specifically about the government we elect and how we can always change them, but the policies that were already made are not so easy to change. This highlights the importance of public opinion (and democracy) in terms of governance, despite the reality that many people, even those who are experts (e.g. physicians, nurses, lawywers, and those from other equally important professions) are not considered to have equal voices as politicians do.
A new notion that I learned from this video is the statistic found by researchers that 89% of the citizens in Europe find that “there is a growing gap between the opnion of the policy makers and the opinion of the public.” (Krastev). As I mentioned previously, this is exemplified in our current social structure where experts like physicians and their opinions bear less weight than the opinions of politicians and businessmen in policy-making.
