Repression
Repression can be defined as the way your mind decides to bury a memory in your subconscious in order to prevent disturbing, dangerous and painful thoughts. In real life, this can be applied to incidents of child abuse and domestic violence.
Denial
When a situation becomes too hectic or out of context, it may not be possible for you to handle it; thus, you will want to stay away from it. By denying such a situation, you protect yourself from unpleasant experiences, and this is what we call denial. The problem of smoking or alcohol consumption is a good example, as you may reach a point where you will want to quit smoking or drinking.
