The Yellow Wallpaper: Analysis Student: Professor: Course title: Date: The story in the Yellow Wall paper is narrated by a woman whose husband, a physician has confined her on the upstairs of a room they rented for summer. The husband forbids the woman from working so that she could be healed from what he considers a “temporary nervous depression” of which she depicts a  HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_hysteria" \o "Female hysteria" hysterical tendency (Edelstein, 2010, 1). This narration portrays the effect of confinement on the narrator’s psychological health and her fall into psychosis. The author employs the aspect of a character in the narration. The narrator’s husband however, does not actually see the seriousness of her deteriorating health. This is more of depicted when the narrator points out that “John does not understand how much I really suffer. He says that there is no reason for one to suffer and that is what is satisfying him. In particular, her husband enjoys to see her suffer simply because she is a woman, because he believes that the condition in which he currents is a temporary one and that she could be healed sooner (Gillman, 11). The narrator seems to be suffering from a kind of depression. Owing to this illness, he locks her in a lonely room where she decides to write journal entries concerning the yellow wallpaper. Also in reference to her husband, she says, “I think that John had never been nervous in the entirety of his life. He laughs at me concerning this wall paper, but one expects that in marriage” ”. This reinforces the assumption that he does not take her very seriously (Stetson, 1982, 2). The yellow Wallpaper is a critique of the position of women by Gilman and in particular with the practice of the women of her moment. According to her observation, most of women of middle class caliber in her time could be distinguished as relegated the role of domestic workers while men had been relegated “active work.” This results into women being considered as second to men.
