The partition of India refers to the division of India by the Britons in 1947. The partition divided India into two independent states of India and Pakistan. The result was that the British Raj (crown rule) was dissolved. The partition occurred along religious lines, with Pakistan carrying the Muslim believes, while India remained with the non-Muslim population. The British interference in India shook the world by displacing 1% of the world’s population and causing over a million deaths. The “Merchant on Venice” play by Kurup tackles some of the challenges religion poses to relationships, particularly in cases involving queerness. The partition of India happened along religious lines, and the “Merchant on Venice” appears to give religious reasons to support divisions in relationships.

Shishir Kurup appeared in various stage plays and partook in several major tours around the world’s acting stages. He also had a chance to direct several stage plays, an involvement in which he succeeded quite well. He also featured in several films, including Khoudri by Paramount Pictures in 1993 and Raji by Gramercy Pictures in 1996. As a thespian, he excelled by composing and writing several plays and various audiobooks. He won several awards such as the Kennedy Center New Play Award, California Arts Council Award, amongst multiple other awards for his involvement in acting and composing.

Kurup wanted to adapt the play because he had mixed reactions to the play after studying it in Grad school. He became attached to the play, given its interesting look into humanity. He developed an interest in deconstructing the play. He also has a mixed history, having been born in Bombay, India, grew up in Mombasa, Kenya, and then proceeded to the United States. He wanted to create a picture of the complexity of human life to the Americans, whom he saw as not taking a similar viewpoint. He views Indians as having an age-old influence of the British accent on their language, having endured the British rule for over three hundred years.

Shakespeare’s audience most likely comprised the rich, who were likely to cheer without having a good understanding of the differences in social classes. Kurup’s audience is likely to comprise the middle and lower-class individuals whose realities of life he represents in his play.
