In the first clip, Iris utilizes a compound sentence to introduce her topic on the importance of education. She speaks in turn of other people on the table while maintaining the subject under conversation by making various comments about it. Contrary, in the second clip, Iris utilizes questions structured in simple sentences to communicate with her husband. She struggles to maintain the topic of conversation whenever her turn to talk comes, by continually asking questions out of context.
I think in the movie clip 24:30-28:26, it is where Iris got her first symptom of Alzheimer’s by forgetting what her response was to the interviewer’s question. She stopped speaking because she could not remember what she wanted to say.
In the clip 26:37-28:26, Iris is in the third stage of dementia characterized by mild cognitive decline. At this stage, an individual becomes increasingly forgetful such as Iris forgetting to meet her publisher. People become restless and lack concentration while their work performance dwindles and one’s loved ones suggests a visit to a doctor. In clip 33:34-35:34, Iris is in the mid-stage five characterized by moderately severe cognitive failure. Here a person suffers from severe memory loss that necessitates their need for assistance in doing the essential activities such as, in Iris’ case, taking the book to the mailbox. The memory loss is prominent whereby one forgets various aspects of their present life. For instance, she cannot remember what education is, and she keeps forgetting when they are going to swim observed by her repeating the question severally.
