The Clash of Ignorance Critical Reflection
1. What was important about the piece you were asked to read/watch?
Edward Said, in his article, The Clash of Ignorance, mainly gave criticism on Samuel Hutington’s The Clash of Civilizations. This piece is important because it stirs a healthy discourse on differences of opinions regarding the notions of “West” and “Islam” based on their labels (Said). Said’s argument that Huntington’s assertion and labeling of the West and Islam as definitive of their identities and as the source of conflict is dangerous, for it no longer reflects reality as the story of the world unfolds and more and more conflicts arise. Said argues that the source of conflicts is ignorance, where people who subscribe to labeling as Huntington demonstrated further exacerbate the negative effects of personifying civilizations (such as misunderstanding as roots of conflicts).
