The concepts of virtue and fortune in Machiavelli’s “The Prince” and allegorical significance of the “fox” and the “lion”.
The two concepts of virtue and fortune are important elements in leadership, only a few scholars have tried to analyze how to use this concept in leadership. Niccolo Machiavelli presents clear arguments to show his concern and how a ruler should be. This essay analyzes two important themes in The Prince which is virtue and fortune; fortune is described as the opportunity given to rule. Machiavelli wrote the Prince to act as a guide for the next leader because he believed that people were motivated by the same desires and fears.
He combined science into politics to generate political science laws that would be administered to bring about desirable changes. Having witnessed cruel leadership in Florence, Machiavelli believed that he could present the difference of how people lived and how they should live to avoid destruction. He called his concept “the political realism” that is to speak the effectual truth of politics (Machiavelli 183).
The concepts of virtue and fortune
According to Machiavelli, rulers who ascend into leadership positions, face challenges in maintaining their positions. Machiavelli discusses the qualities that an ideal Prince should possess. The concept of virtue and fortune answers some key questions, including whether to be loved or to be feared. For him, being feared would be better than being loved because he believed that it is better for a leader to be much safer by being feared. He described humans as ungrateful, false, indecisive, cowards and covetous. A Prince should inspire fear, but where he does not win love, he should avoid hatred (Machiavelli 185).
