Civilizations And Its Discontents: Chapter 1

Coursework Instructions:

Prompt from the English Professor:
* Read Chapter 1 of Sigmund Freud's "Civilization and its Discontents" then complete the following:
There are 3 parts that I want you to answer: first part answer the "Observation", second answer the "Passage" part, and finally answer the "Question" part.
Each part the (Observation, Passage and Question) should each be answered with a minimum of 180 words for at least a total of 2 pages.
* Part 1: Observation: Write a few sentences about something you found interesting or worthy of discussion. It could be something thematic, like its point of view on the American Dream. Or it could be an observation about issues of gender, sexuality, psychology, socioeconomic class, etc. Or, it could be something generally along those lines.
* Part 2: Passage: Look for a quote from the Chapter 1 of Sigmund Freud's "Civilization and Its Discontents" reading that stands out to you for one reason or another then once you find a quote make sure to write the page number and explain as best you can what that reason is that it stands out to you. It might be admiring or critiquing the construction of the language, the idea being discussed, its relevance to some larger concept, etc.
* Part 3: Question: Now I want you to write down a question or two about something you don't quite understand or something on which you just would like other students' perspective.
Again reminder for each of the three parts your answer should be with a minimum of 180 words and a total of 2 pages.
Notes from me to the writer:
• This assignment doesn't require it for it to be answered like an essay but rather just a few sentences or paragraph for each part.
* The assignment must be done in Times New Roman Font Size 12 with 1 inch margins all around.
• The book I have is Sigmund Freud's "Civilization and Its Discontents" The Standard Edition.
• I did include image files with screenshots of the pages that include Sigmund Freud's "Civilization and Its Discontents" page 10 through page 21 in chronological order.

This sense of connection to nature in turn affects virtually every aspect of one’s psychology, from personality to one’s beliefs and religion. The ability to be able to balance between the ego and id; the innermost perception or belief of oneself and the outside environment that controls actions, is what sets aside each individual’s personality. It is also what really separates the belief systems of individuals, as not everyone subscribes to the same assertions, in just the same way he also notes that he doesn’t subscribe to that oceanness feeling (p.11). Through the allusion to Rome, Freud illustrates a very interesting aspect of human psychology; that whatever is saved in the brain is virtually indelible. All the experiences and lessons learnt by an individual through life, will always find some room in the brain. The process of mental or psychological growth and development therefore, only entails trimming, sifting or pruning away portions of these memories. Passage Perhaps the quote that stands out the most from the reading of chapter 1, is “It is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement – that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life” (p...
