Canto 5 of the Divine Comedy tells the story of Paolo and Francesca, one of the most admired episodes in the Divine Comedy. What is your opinion of Francesca?

My opinion of Francesca is that she is someone who will do anything for love, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness and committing sin. Even if she is capable of sinning and can be guilty of it, I think that she does not deserve to be placed in hell just for loving Paolo eternally. In fact, it is torture for her because they are in the same circle, but they cannot be like how they were on earth. Francesca is a lovely lady and she was placed in Hell because of her devotion to loving Paolo.
I think that Francesca has the capability of committing sin, but she is also a victim. It is because her only concern is her beloved, instead of the immortal soul. That is the only happiness she held onto and during her misery, under Paolo’s love. The man she loved was heaven for her and now it has become hell. Francesca loved Paolo while they were still alive and she will continue to love him even if she is in Hell. However, these lovers are doomed because they will never stop loving, so they will never rise out of it. This aspect is represented by Dante placing Paolo near Francesca, and the two of them in the same circle in Hell forever. This makes Francesca a victim of love that she cannot resist. According to the University of Texas, Francesca and Paolo were given punishment in Hell because of the adultery they committed.
