Civil Religion
America has for the longest time used religion as a basis for most of the decision that involve nationalism. Religion is used as a symbol of Americanism. Most of the places that it is used, it acts as a cover while the decisions that re made after that are rarely a reflection of the same. Ideally the element of civil religion is symbolic in the American culture. This is aspect that speaks to the symbol of religion that are found in most of the nation’s laws and has been institutionalized with references in the national anthem and statements such as In God We Trust.
Looking at Bellah’s definition of civil religion in the American society, there is the element of institutionalized sacred beliefs (Bellah, Robert N.). There are references of a transcendent being called God. In the Inaugural addressed such as the example given in Bellah’s essay of Kennedy’s ceremony, where the president uses the word, God, three times (Bellah, Robert N.). A closer review of the civil religion shores that there is a rather twisted element of religion and its application in the nation (Bellah, Robert N.). It is an element that could be considered to Americanism. While it is used to imply the impact that God has in the nation, it is mentioned and used in the various institutions with little or no significance on the activities that any of the institutions or ceremonies where in reference (Bellah, Robert N.).
