So, there's lots to talk about with appropriation artist, Richard Prince. Let's dive in.
First, briefly summarize the various views presented in the readings about Prince and his art. Who thinks what about him and his work?
Then, explain your early position on Prince and his preferred artistic medium: appropriation.
1. what do you think of his appropriation art - the instagram exhibit and The Catcher in the Rye novel, in particularly. Art or not? Why?
2. for art to fit the definition of fair use, the artist has to achieve a transformative purpose, which can be commentary or criticism, or parody. Do you see Richard Prince's art as having a purpose? Is he making commentary or criticism or parody? If so, of what? Hint - take a careful look at the comments he added to the instagram pieces ***Pictures attached. Art appropriation is an aspect that is globally developing as individuals and artists alike embrace it. It has issues up for debate especially originality and authorship which are issues that create problems especially in the legal aspect of art. Appropriation art forces an observer to form a new opinion of the art presented before them even if they are aware of the original artwork. Through photographing and manipulating, artists craft a technique of appropriation and provocation. The method draws its subjects from subcultures and cultural cliché. Art appropriation makes a familiar piece of art to seem strange and different and summons an observer to scrutinize something which is usually paid a quick glance. Therefore, a viewer can get a fresh idea about the art involved.
