Luxen, Micah, Lussenhop, Jessica, and Vaidyanathan, Rajini. “National Emergency: Is There a Crisis on the US-Mexico Border?” BBC News, BBC, 15 Feb. 2019, /news/world-us-canada-44319094.
The authors seek to demystify the immigration crisis experienced in the US in the recent past and dubbed a national emergency. The article demonstrates that the current state of affairs in regards to immigrants has improved for nearly two decades where the number of immigrants reached unprecedented levels. The article confirms that the ‘manufactured’ crisis has, in fact, the least number of recorded immigrants for the last 18 years. Apart from the most popular southern border illegal crossings, other notable areas are along the Canadian border and the coastal border. The article makes an important reporting regarding the largest number of illegal immigrants in the US. While the illegal cross-border migrants dominate the headlines, the authors note that the largest number of migrants in the US is those who overstay in the country after the expiry of their visas. In 2016, for instance, 739,478 migrants overstayed in the US after their visas expired, compared to 563,204 migrants who entered the US using illegal border crossings. Therefore, while much attention is given to illegal border-crossing migrants, the visa overstays are currently accounting for the largest proportion of US migrants.

The author, a border control and Latin America specialist at New Mexico State University, explores the state of the illegal immigration into the United States and why the current numbers are considerably low compared to the start of the 21st century. The article provides evidence as to why the current migrant caravans record lower number of migrants. For instance, an excess of 1.6 million illegal immigrants was arrested in 2000. The subsequent year, that number was 1.3 million. The recent...
