Character Analysis: A Raisin in the Sun
Characters in the same novel tend to exhibit different behaviors, attitudes, and characteristics. It becomes interesting when these characters are related. This is the case with Mama (Lena Younger) and Walter Lee Younger in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. In the novel, Mama and Walter demonstrate different beliefs when it comes to handling money.
On the one hand, Mama does not value material wealth. To her, money does not define who she is. While she does not have much money, she walks tall and carries herself with dignity. Money does not define her in any way. For example, Mama says that once she receives the $10,000 insurance check, she will donate her part to the church.
Additionally, any income Mama receives is for the benefit of the family. Her children form a significant part of her life. She does not have a dream of her own since she sees the children as her “harvest” (Hansberry). The motivation to look for money is to better the living conditions...
