Question 1: Political and economic problems faced by the new Chinese Republic after the fall of the Qing Dynasty
The regular fighting between warlords caused constant devastation to people due to their control over different aspects of Chinese society. Furthermore, the economic interests of foreign powers such as Germany, Japan, Britain, and France interfered with the running of the republic. Imperialism brought about by the foreign forces, as well as the warlords, was viewed as a dividing factor aimed at inhibiting Chinese growth and plundering its resources.
Question 2: Communists and the Nationalists cooperate on the Northern Expedition
Communists and Nationalists cooperated initially as a prerequisite for the Soviet Union’s help in the setting up of a military Academy. The training was geared towards uniting the country through the Northern Expedition aimed at defeating imperialism and the reign of the Northern warlords.
However, the Communists were viewed as trying to destroy the family system, ethical structure and religion of the Nationalists through their actions. Therefore, the cooperation was considered as a temporary concession by the Communists to gain Nationalist support, which eventually led to the purge that caused the break-up.
Question 3: Chiang Kai-shek’s description of the Japanese
Over the years, Japan had economic interests in Northern China Manchuria, which posed a potential problem for Chiang Kai-Shek. Japan also aimed to colonize China and take over the region’s economic resources. The unpopular policy taken by Kai-Shek reluctance to engage the Japanese ultimately led to the takeover of Manchuria since his army did not fight them off.
