Across history, people have been in the look of new chances, future and better life. Because of environmental, political, cultural and economic situations, migrations have been both involuntary and voluntary. Today, over 68million people get displace from their homes with most of them made to move from their country totally. Migration problems heard every day have provoked numerous responses from the painters. Migration art is different and many thereby posing many questions about policies, perceptions and presentations of migration and lightning on the topic of memory as well as placeless and the dream chances along with hope of chances for a promising future.
The ONE WAY TICKET is an exhibition that features two afro-diasporic artists. This is not just a collection of pictures showing people but portraits that directly considers migration as a site of focus. ONE WAY TICKET looks to investigate how the artists have decided to focus on migration on their portraits in terms of perceptions and experiences of migration (Sandhu70).
Jacob Lawrence was born in 1917 and died in 2000 an African-American artist who was popular for his demonstration of African-Americans’ life. Apart from being an artist, he was a storyteller, interpreter and an educator. He is among the most popular 20th century African-American artists. He was just 25 years of age when he got nationally recognized with a migration series that he did on cardboard. The series presented the African-Americans distinct migration to urban North from rural South. Lawrence’s style was dynamic cubism.
