Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens one’s bones. The condition can cause the bones to be so brittle that even slight stress or a fall can result in a fracture. Besides calcium intake, other risk factors for the condition include age, sex, body frame size, and family history.
The article by Thompson reports on a review which concluded that old people should not be taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. The the researchers, who carried out several clinical trials, found that there was little evidence to support the assertion that supplements can help protect against broken bones among old people. Therefore, the study proposed that it is time for old people stopped taking the supplements. The article also gathers the view of other experts who weighed in their opinion on the topic. The experts are not in agreement with the findings of the review as they consider the supplements useful. Dr. Smith appears to dismiss the recommendations of the findings by noting that when a hip fracture occurs, its personal health cost can be huge. According to him, the potential benefits of the supplements in preventing hip fractures are more than the minimum risks associated with their use. The article notes that old people have always been advised to get enough calcium and vitamin D as they age to reduce the risk of bone fractures. Given that the body cannot produce its own calcium, too little intake of the mineral can result in osteoporosis. Women aged 50 and below and men aged 70 and below should have a daily calcium intake of 1000 mg. For people who are older than these ages, it is recommended that they get daily calcium intake of 1200 mg. While the study recommends that old people should stop taking the supplements, vitamin D and calcium are extremely important to one’s health. However, one should get them through lifestyle and diet as opposed to supplements. Calcium can be gotten from food items such as vegetables, beans, and fruits while vitamin D can be received through sunlight. Therefore, physical activities out in the sunshine can provide one with enough vitamin D.
From the slide, it is evident that spinach contains high amounts of calcium. However, very little amounts are absorbed into the body per serving. It means that spinach cannot supply the body with the required amount of calcium.
