A writer must first select a debatable topic in order to make an argument. The selected topic should be rooted in evidence and the writer should make a stand on the topic in a way that allows others to counter-argue using evidence.
The five persuasive elements include context, thesis statement, evidence, counterargument, and conclusion (McKinney). The context element informs the reader why the topic is important. The thesis statement presents the essay’s main argument. Evidence refers to citations from scholarly sources that are used by the writer to back up the thesis statement. The counterargument element considers how other scholars might oppose the thesis statement of the essay. Finally, the conclusion element of the persuasive essay presents a summary...
