The article by John Street focuses on the election of Barrack Obama in November 2008. The author views Barrack Obama as a celebrity politician whose campaign speeches were done to a worldwide audience through different channels including pop songs by wil.i.am and the Black Eyed Peas, the “Yes We Can” campaign that was sold out in all platforms including sports, Facebook, Twitter, and other components. The article deals with the question of celebrity politics and celebrity politicians from three perspectives. It starts by looking at the case of New Labor and the role of celebrity politics in enhancing party communication and the making of policies. The second perspective answers how celebrity politics might be perceived in situations of general social change, which leads to the third point of view where the article analyses and argues the emphasis of cross-comparison of celebrity politics and perceptions of the audience. Using discussions, interviews, analysis of secondary sources and news, the author answers the questions of each perspective by giving a brief background of the notion of New Labor and the journey it has come from “Cool Britannia to Cultural Policy” to being an epitome of the case of celebrity politics in the current world.
