Business Problem
Taiyu's business research problem was to examine how staff used Information Systems (IS) after implementation in organizations. Investigating the issue stemmed from companies' eager investments into implementing information systems, but often the staff did not use the IS in their business dealings as intended. The failure to use IS in businesses led to wasteful investments by organizations because they did not improve performance and productivity as they lacked substantial returns even after implementation.
Gap in Literature
The literature gap existed due to the limited amount of studies that looked into staff used IS post-implementation. Staff expectations about the systems are one of the topics missing from existing literature on IS's organizational use. Another literature gap Taiyu identified is that staff thoughts were also not analyzed in previous studies on organization and how they use IS after its adoption. The actual use of information systems was also missing from the existent reviews presenting another literature gap in the research topic.
Reasons for Taiyu to choose an explanatory case study
In his research methodology, Taiyu preferred to use an explanatory case study as the qualitative approach. There are various reasons for using an explanatory case study in research. For Tiayu, one of the reasons for using the research design is the novelty of the topic as there is limited literature on IS use. This means that most of the findings are new and need discursive analysis to understand the behavioral and situational factors influencing the neglect of IS. According to Davidoff (2019), explanatory studies help researchers understand complicated contexts to produce testable causal theories and relationships between events and situations. The complexity of Taiyu's task is due to the lack of previous research on the topic, thus needing a detailed study on the situational factors that motivate, or demotivate, staff from using information systems. Another justification for Taiyu's choice of explanatory case study is that it gives him the freedom to combine both interviews with secondary sources analysis. The study design helps the researcher identify areas with minimal research by establishing what is happening by using interviews, which gather rich data on the variables' relationship and role. The explanatory case study also helps establish policy generalizations to identify predictive patterns in staff behavior, explaining their future use of installed IS. The secondary sources used in the design included the hospital website, government white paper, internal documents, and assessment reports to supplement the interviews. An explanatory case study helps researchers conduct organization-wide research to better understands a widespread situation by allowing for closer analysis and creating the base for future research (China Scholarship Council, 2018).
