Holloway, Marguerite. The Measure of Manhattan: The Tumultuous Career and Surprising Legacy of John Randel Jr., Cartographer, Surveyor, Inventor. 2013.
Holloway examines a significant figure in the American history. In the book it is asserted that Randel (1787–1865) was a surveyor and cartographer whose fate rested entirely on the 1811 establishment of a grid plan that resulted in the streets and property lines that profoundly transformed New York City and its growth, enabling it to logically expand into the great cosmopolis it is today. The author states that Randel was the main contributor to the development of Manhattan but Randel later died in financial ruin. During this period, Randel created surveying devices, planned an early elevated subway, and recommended for a provocative alternative route for the Erie Canal which made him have a lot of enemies. The route would ease the task of the traders and manufacturers who used to ships back to New York. The Measure of Manhattan is more of surveying and cartography and how it changed the roads and cities in which people live today. This is a helpful work for anyone who wants to do their research on the history of Manhattan, survey, and American history.
