The concept of software development is briefly discussed in SLP 3 to reinforce how software project are initiated, managed, and developed. A classical framework known as the systems development life cycle (SDLC) is introduced as the model to group the major tasks into eight phases: project initiation, systems analysis and feasibility studies, logical analysis and design, acquisition or development, implementation, operations, post-audit, and maintenance.

The systems development lifecycle is made up of 7 phases. These include the following: Phase 1: Identify objectives, opportunities, and problems – this stage looks to identify any opportunities or problems that exist as well as the goals or objectives which the project should pursue. It is notable that just because there is an opportunity or problems does not essentially imply that it has to be addressed in this particular project (Pollard, Gupta & Satzinger, 2010). Operational, economic and technical feasibility is also determined. The personnel involved in this phase include systems management, user management and analyst.
Phase 2: Determine information requirements – the information requirements are determined by using questionnaires; observing the personnel and system involved; gathering operating and systems documents; and interviewing the company’s management and operations personnel. This phase entails learning the why, how, when, where, what, and who for each of these (Öztürk, 2013). The personnel who are involved in this stage include systems management, user operations workers, user management and analyst. Phase 3: Analyze systems needs – this stage entails creating data flow diagrams, documenting procedural logic for data flow diagram processes, making semi-structured decisions, completing the data dictionary, preparing and presenting the system proposal, and recommending the best solution to the management. The personnel involved include systems management, user management, and analyst (Tomar, 2011).
Phase 4: Design the recommended system – this entails designing the user interface including design input and design output. It also entails designing database, files and system controls; producing program specification; producing decision trees and tables; and lastly selecting hardware (Öztürk, 2013). Phase 5: Develop and document software – this stage of the SDLC entails designing computer programs with the use of pseudocode, Nassi-Schneiderman charts, and structure charts; walkthrough program design; and writing computer programs.
