POWER PROCESS MEMO INSTRUCTIONS

At the beginning of each chapter of your textbook is a Power Process.  These Power Processes provide information and helpful tools for students.  Your assignment is to select one of the Power Processes and write a memo to me.  The memo should contain 3-4 paragraphs (about one page in length) and content should include:

WHAT DID YOU READ?

Provide the Chapter, page number, and the title of the Process.  What was the material about (what were the main points)?  Was the information new to you or related to a previous experience?  If you can relate to a previous experience, describe the previous experience.

SO, WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN TO YOU?

What are your thoughts as you read the Power Process or how would you explain this Power Process to your classmates?  How does it fit in with the things you already know or feel?

NOW WHAT

Specifically, what can you do differently after reading the Power Process?  How can you use this information for your academic, personal, or career goals? Describe a few examples of behaviors, skills, feelings, or ideas, which can make your life different?

  • This memo is to be submitted with a professional look.
  • It must be completed in correct format.  This memo should be entered in a block format.
  • All spelling and grammar errors must be corrected.  You will lose one point for each uncorrected error.
  • Proofread your work before turning it in.

Chapter Review Question
After reading Chapter 1, the article that I liked best was “Power Process: Ideas are tools”. I like the article because it radically contradicted how I perceived ideas. I previously believed that one has to believe in an idea if it is to work. However, the article revealed that ideas do not have to be true or false to work. Rather than trying to figure out whether an idea is true or false, it is best to just use it and see if it works or not (Ellis & Toft, 2014). The article gave me the courage to try new ideas without limiting my openness to various kinds of ideas. After reading the article, I became more receptive to new ideas, regardless of how absurd and useless they may seem.
I no longer worry if an idea is going to work or not. If a new idea works, I will apply it again but if it fails, I can always try a different idea (Barkacs, 2023). The article helped me realize that there is no right idea and that it is unwise not to be open to other perspectives that may work better than our current idea. I do not have to believe in an idea to try it. I have learned to suspend judgment of any new idea until I have tested it. I now only judge an idea after I have determined its efficacy in accomplishing the intended job.
