Every society and government across the world have norms, behavior, and code of conduct that define right and wrong. Usually, these set of social standards provide order and peace coexistence of people in society. However, many are times when people develop deviant behavior contrary to social norms (Diaconescu, 2017). For instance, while it is generally unethical to steal in any society, some people steal anyway. In reality, social deviance is the root cause of many social problems in society including murder, robbery, theft, rape, assault, unemployment, child abuse, homelessness, drug abuse, bullying, and conflicts to name a few (Diaconescu, 2017). Social deviance range from minor actions such as traffic violence or making noise in the classroom, to major behavior like killing and rape.
Typically, deviance is an action that interrupts the social norms thus creating negative social reactions. Some conducts are considered dangerous, that governments and societies have developed laws that ban such acts. For instance, in the United States, killing is a capital offense punishable by the law. Deviant behavior normative expectations of a specific group. For example, rape has been perpetuated by the deviance of sexual norms that define the appropriate age and procedures of engagement. Naturally, many society want their norms to be followed and enforced. In a nutshell, social norms and standards play a vital role in enhancing order and peaceful coexistence only if the norms are followed strictly (Diaconescu, 2017).
Child abuse is a global social problem, more especially in developing countries. According to the World Health Organisation (2020), three in four children aged between two and four years often suffer from either emotional or physical violence or both in the hands of their parents or caregivers. For instance, over 120 million female minors have undergone some form of forced sexual maltreatment such as rape.
