Read: Complete reading chapter 13 in “Social Problems, sixth edition” by John. J. Macionis (Education), and chapter 14 (Urban Life). Complete reading chapters 7 thru 10 in the “Hillbilly Elegy” by J. D.Vance.
Respond: Describe what chapters 13 and 14 are about in the Macionis work. Those chapters speak to a lot of social problems, especially in urban areas. Given that, what are your thoughts about resolving social problems as suggested by Brooks's video (https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=C9xLqYR3ZTc). Explain whether Feagin's power-conflict perspective comes to light as you think about Brook's recommendations for change. Provide brief descriptive accounts of what chapters 7 thru 10 are about in the Vance work.

In Macionis work he discussed the increasing importance of education especially these days. In Chapter 13, he stated that the trend of educational attainment is constantly increasing since more college students are graduating these years. However, he also discussed pertinent issues such as the difference in between educational attainment between low-income and high-income countries, as well as within them. Specifically for the United States, his work discussed how even our greatest efforts and achievements has prevented the increase in illiteracy in the country. In relation to the video presented by Brooks, he discussed how our genes as well as our circumstances (nature vs. nurture) could affect our mood and emotions in life. When viewed in this perspective, it could be argued that in order to solve this problem of illiteracy, we must also change the “changeable” circumstances, which is our circumstances. In order to do this, institutions and support groups must be the one to provide the necessary adjustments to help people engage in learning activities that would allow for the expression of their own personalities and strengths. A kind of educational system, which is not biased by racial and class segregation as proposed by Faekin in his concept of the Power-conflict perspective.
