Music has long been considered as an important tool used to seek social change . Music plays an essential role in our society because it inspires participation, fostering a sense of community (Paquette, 2015).“Another day in paradise” is one of the famous classical songs performed by Phil Collins. The song highlights the consequences of ignoring the needy people (Paquette, 2015). The song portrays social conscious messages (Paquette, 2015).
The song “Another day in paradise” describes a man out in the street, ignoring the plight of a homeless woman who calling out for help. The homeless person said” it is cold and got “nowhere to sleep." However, the man walking on the street pretends that he cannot see her, the man crosses the street to avoid the homeless woman (Paquette, 2015). The lyrics go on to show how people often ignore those in need. No one seems to be listening to the plight of most people in need. The song states that it is just another day in paradise for us who are lucky to have all the basic needs. Collins uses the song wondering, “There must be something God can say (Paquette, 2015).
In one of the interviews, Phil Collins stated his reason for writing the song was to portray to the world that an average person would react the same way like the man in the song did when approached by a needy person, especially a beggar (Paquette, 2015). He stated that what he saw in America, is worrying because people avoid helping the poor. They often pretend that these people do not exist. It is as if live in their paradise where everything seems to be perfect. Unlike the needy, other people have homes, water, food and can afford to buy the things they want rather than what they need (Paquette, 2015).
