1. What is the difference between intrinsic and instrumental value?
Intrinsic value is where an object or entity has a certain allure of goodness for its own sake or benefit. An example is happiness. It is already an end to itself since there is no additional benefit to being happy. One cannot be happy with 'being happy' because it is the same thing ultimately. This means that happiness is an intrinsic value on its own. On the other hand, instrumental value is when such an entity is good because it can result in a certain benefit when applied to some purpose. In other terms, it helps one to get or achieve something else.
The best example of something that has instrumental value is money. It is good not because of just being there as money, but rather, due to its importance once used. One can spend money to accomplish certain missions or duties, and hence, it is used as an instrument or a tool to satisfy certain needs. Upon looking at the distinction between these two values, the most evident bottom line is the value direction. While instrumental value is directed to someone or something else, intrinsic value is directed to itself and hence, for the sake of itself.
2. What is the difference between hedonism and desire-satisfaction theory?
Hedonism is a theory which focusses on the experience of actual and absolute pleasure, upholding the notion that all forms of pain are not welcome and all form of happiness is welcome, from an intrinsic perspective. On the other hand, the desire-satisfaction theory is of the notion that the ultimate meaning of a good life is the realization and fulfillment of someone's desires. In short, the theory dictates that one's life is good if their desires and are satisfied or achieved and hence, an aggregate balance between the desire and satisfaction of these desires. There is also the main theme in both theories, which differentiates them, and that is desire.
Whereas the desire-satisfaction theory is not affected by experience, hedonism is affected by experience. A person is indeed bound to be pleased whenever his or her desires are satisfied; however, there isn't a clear assurance that these desires will indeed cause pleasure. Another difference is that while hedonism is not affected by what is happening around the external environment, the desire-satisfaction theory is quite affected. An explanation for this is that the desire-satisfaction theory works based on desire, and desire is in itself a product of a cooperative external environment.
