Evo Psychology: Problems of Kinship, Pertaining to Grand-Parental

Coursework Instructions:

Grand-parental investment is a special arena for testing predictions from inclusive fitness theory. Paternity uncertainty comes into play. A paternal grandfather has double the risk of genetic relatedness being severed. First, he might not be the father of his children. Second, his son might not be the father of his own children. Grandmothers, in contrast, are 100 percent certain that they are the genetic relatives of the children of their daughters. On the basis of this logic, we should expect mothers’ mothers to show the heaviest grand-parental investment, on average, and fathers’ fathers to show the least. The other two types of grandparents—fathers’ mothers and mothers’ fathers—should show investment patterns between these extremes because in each of these cases, there is one opportunity for genetic relatedness to be severed.
Post a brief (one or two paragraph) discussion of problems of kinship such as the one described above (other examples are also appropriate).

Evo psychology: Problems of Kinship
The problem of kinship pertaining to grand-parental investment as described is enlightening and eye-opening. Another example of problems of kinship is that of investment by aunts, uncles, and cousins. The expected relatedness, as Nettle and Nelissen (2012) pointed out, is essentially a function of 2 factors which are as follows: (i) paternal uncertainty brought about by extra-pair copulations; and (ii) genealogical linkage, for instance sisters are more closely related compared to nephews and uncles. The sister’s siblings are positive and in no doubt that their sister is in fact the mother of her child. As such, these uncles and aunts are certain and in no doubt that they are actually the genetic relatives of their nephews and nieces. On the other hand, the brother’s siblings are unsure given that their brother might have in fact been cuckolded. Therefore, this brings about the prediction of differential investment by uncles and aunts, and this is dependent ...
