ORIGIN OF ALL THINGS

Provide your response in this column.

Every religion has a cosmology/cosmogony to explain its view of the universe and the place of humans in it. Explain the cosmology/cosmogony for this week’s religion. Explain how it is manifested in the subsequent worldview that develops for that religion.

Buddhism scriptures contain vast information regarding the universe. Ancient Buddhism traces its roots India. The religion conceptualizes the vastness of “space, incomprehensible time and the considerations of life existence” (Yamamoto and Kuwahara, 2008). According to Abhidharmakosa-bhásya, the Buddhist scriptures that capture the Buddhist cosmology, Mt. Sumeru is located at the center surrounded by seven mountain ranges and dividing seas. Four continents surround the latter with human beings inhabiting one of the continents (Embudai). Embudai is sandwiched between Hell below and Heaven and Mediator worlds existing vertically above. Both sun and moon rotate around the world system (Yamamoto and Kuwahara, 2008: p. 128).
The Buddhist cosmology extends the definition of the universe to accommodate the possibility of multiple universes, similar to the multiverse concept suggested by the modern cosmology studies.

NATURE OF GOD/CREATOR

Provide your response in this column.

In what way does this religion have a God or gods? How does this worship of deity/deities reflect the cosmology of the religion? If the religion has no God/gods, in what way does this absence reflect their cosmology?

Buddhism denies the existence of supreme deities and gods (Blackburn & Samuels, 2003). Instead, Buddhism bases its teachings on mere concepts of gods, heavens and Samsara doctrine of rebirths (Hayes, 1988).
