Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories
Yoga and EMDR are two treatment treatments addressed in Van der Kolk. He then went on to discuss how they pertain to neuroscience. Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM) is a treatment that was not covered in Van der Kolk but seems promising based on trauma neurobiology. It is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is quickly becoming known as the most effective neurological intervention for trauma treatment. It retrieves and modifies the memory using a brief visualization process. The RTM protocol is a trauma-focused behavioral treatment (TFCBT) that is brief, non-traumatizing, and derived from neurolinguistic programming (NLP) approaches. It is a stress-free treatment strategy that has been demonstrated to alleviate PTSD nightmares and flashback symptoms.
