While numerous studies have proven the physical benefits of exercise, including improving physical condition and one’s immunity, fewer studies have investigated the impact of exercise on mental stress and overall cognitive function. The few studies that have examined the effects of exercise as a stress relief agent assert that the mental benefits of working out have a neurochemical foundation CITATION Dav17 \l 1033 (David & Tenenbaum, 2017). Exercise lowers a person’s stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline while stimulating the production of mood elevating hormones such as endorphins. Endorphins are responsible for the excitement that one feels while exercising as well as the feelings of jauntiness and relaxation that follow a quick workout. Other studies have also pointed out a behavioral basis for the alleviating effects of aerobic exercise on mental stress. Individuals who regularly exercise gradually earn a sense of pride and self-confidence in themselves.
Not only does working out enhance one’s image, it also cultivates strength and self-discipline, which in turn increase one’s poise and mastery of daily stressors. Exercising is also a useful distraction from the day’s irritations and helps improve one’s rest, which is often interrupted by anxiety and depression CITATION Chi14 \l 1033 (Childs & Wit, 2014). Additional research needs to be conducted on the relieving effects of exercise on stress because of its potential effectiveness as a stress-reduction method, especially among university students.
