Generativity versus stagnation is one of Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development that takes place during an individual’s middle adulthood between 40 to 65 years. According to Erik Erikson’s theory, adults in this stage strive to nurture or create things that are meant to outlast them. Usually, this entails contributing to society or positive things that are beneficial to other people and future generation or by parenting children (McLeod, 2018). These are significant needs that define the generativity Vs stagnation phase of development. Generativity means leaving a mark on the face of the earth by creating and achieving things or caring for others; hence, making the world a better place. On the other hand, stagnation means failing to make any worthwhile contribution (Cherry, 2019). Although this theory ties together essential psychological development throughout an individual’s lifespan, it fails to suggest distinct stages of personality development.
