Environmental Conservation
Environmental conservation is currently a goal for every nation. However, implementing this viewpoint faces several trials. Thus, the study focuses on philosophies that facilitate environmental protection and the resulting challenges.
Wildlife Management
Presently the number of animal rehabilitation centers have grown. The large population of wild animals has become a problem. Thus, to counter the problem the wildlife management have introduced culling policies (The Economist, 2013a). Culling is an approach of controlling a population of wild animals by perceptive slaughter. For instance, starving animals are set aside and slaughtered. This philosophy is fundamental in controlling the appropriate number of wild animals in an area. The two articles talk about wild animals. Moreover, in both materials, the idea of protecting the wild animals is paramount. The Oostvaardersplassen is a place set aside for caring endangered species of wild animals. On the other hand, the government has put measures to shield the deer. However, they differ in land use; the Oostvaardersplassen is a home for wild animals while the Scottish Highlands area is used for estate farming and deer grazing. In Oostvaardersplassen, there is a problem of overpopulation of wild animal. The high number of deer threatens farmers in Scottish Highlands. These problems can be solved by introducing culling strategy. It is effective in regulating the number of animals.
The Oostvaardersplassen is an area set aside for wildlife conservation in Amsterdam (The Economist, 2013a). Initially, the land was reclaimed from the sea for an industrial estate. However, when it persistently remained vacant, Franz Vera brought the hint of hosting Pleistocene fauna. Initially, he introduced Heck cattle. He later added the Konik ponies and the red deer. With time, the population of deer and horses propagated and increased in number. Soon the problem of overgrazing was pronounced which led to the death of trees (The Economist, 2013a). Thus, the zone curved into marsh and grassland. As the population of the herbivores exploded a problem of food insecurity was experienced. Hence, some animals died due to starving while others were victims of culling. However, the forest contributed significantly to wildlife conservation, for instance, a death wolf seen in Netherlands after a decade of absence (The Economist, 2013a).
Paul Lister and Anders Hoch Povlsen are estate farmers (The Economist, 2013c). Mr. Lister owns the 93,000 ha Alladale estate while Mr. Ponlsen owns 60,000 ha in the eastern highlands of Britain (The Economist, 2013c). Both guys suffer from the problem of wild animals attacking their flora. In fact, the large population of deer has become a nuisance to them. However, for others the deer are the main source of earnings. For instance, revenues are generated from tourism. Hence, indicating a conflict between wildlife and human beings. The deer management groups have the accountability of controlling the population of deer in conjunction with Farmers and landowners.
