It is quite evident that BP has addressed a number of fines as a cost for doing their business. The company was heavily fined by (OSHA) Occupational Safety and Health Administration after the 2005 explosion at an oil refinery in Texas that left fifteen workers dead and injured many others. In the 2006, they were fined $20 million for failing to correct a leaking pipe in Alaska which later caused its closure. In the year 2010; BP was again fined by OSHA for not addressing the changes they promised after the Texas City explosion. BP has therefore spent a lot of money trying to settle fines mainly resulting from their negligence.
QUESTION TWO
BP’s executive Tony Hayward replaced Lord Browne and later focused on the company’s safety. He first of all committed to spending five million dollars so as to address the challenges experienced at the Texas refinery after the explosion that occurred in 2005.He also settled a number of criminal charges that were made against the company which accrued to three hundred and seventy million dollars. Tony Hayward has been criticized since the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion happened under his management and critics say that he has not done enough to bring out the change needed in BP. However the critics are justified to expect more change than they saw, this is due to the shortcomings that were concurrently facing BP and nothing much was done even with the change in management. Scientists claim that they were denied access to video footage of the Deepwater Explosion that would help the oil flow rates and establish how much oil was lost.
