Introduction
What is the relationship between dual usage (smoking and vaping) and smoker identity? Dual usage is motivated and influenced by different factors, depending on the person's social and physical cues. While some people may start vaping as a way of cessation to smoking, others indulge in it due to forced circumstances, accompanied by the desire to smoke. In this case, they use vaping as an alternative to the imposed situation because they cannot smoke at that particular moment. The dilemma in identifying the relationship between dual usage and smoker identity raised the need for an interview with a victim participant to identify the motivators for dual usage. This paper discusses the thematic analysis of the interview engagement relating to vaping and smoking and their relationship to the smoker identity.
Method
After getting the dual user's approval and consent for an interview, the individual was summoned for an interview regarding vaping and smoking. The interviewee is reported to have been smoking during University days and indulged in vaping later after a substantial period of smoking. The history in dual usage reveals that the respondent could be the best person for analyzing the relationship between dual usage and smoker identity.
Materials
The interviewer brought writing materials such pens and papers to record the interviewee's answers for analysis at the end of the session. The papers included the questions to be asked during the interview, where both parties had copies of the documents before the interview for familiarization. However, the interviewee answered basic questions on his personal experience in smoking and vaping, and knowing the questions before commencing of the actual interview aided in acquiring adequate and sufficient information for the study. The interviewer must have had directions on how to get to the interview venue to ensure that the issue does not undermine the chances of getting the anticipated answers by keeping the respondent waiting. Besides, it is only advisable to be 10-15 minutes early before the actual start of the interview.
Procedure
The process entailed collecting data through a prepared questionnaire with questions on the respondent's engagement in smoking to vaping, and finally dual usage. However, the answers for some questions yielded the need for clarification thorough explanation of some of the points. Thus, the interviewer got the loop to engage more questions, enhancing the collected data's efficacy. The chosen method for the interview enhanced the respondent's evaluation attitude and preferences, putting the interviewer in a better position of knowing the best alignment of questions regarding smoking and vaping. The interviewer was also careful to avoid distracting questions since the topic involved discussion on the interviewee's personal life, and crossing some boundaries would limit the adequacy of the acquired data.
